Rubrics

Documentation :: Teachers :: Assignments :: Rubrics

Rubrics allow teachers, tutors and instructors to use their own custom grading scales when the ChemQuiz.net Dashboard automatically scores their assignments. Rubric scores can then be displayed to students as well as exported into another learning management system (LMS) such as Canvas.

Rubrics are only available to educators with an active site license for the ChemQuiz.net Dashboard. If you have multiple Chemistry teachers at one school, rubrics are automatically shared between those colleagues. Find out more about the ChemQuiz.net Dashboard and how you can try it out for free!

Create a rubric

To create a new rubric, follow these steps:

ChemQuiz.net Dashboard with Assignments menu option highlighted

  • This will display the Assignments page. In the top menu, click on Rubrics:

ChemQuiz.net Dashboard with Rubrics submenu option highlighted

  • Click on the pink Create a Rubric button:

  • Complete the form with the following information:
    • Rubric name: Enter a name for your rubric; it must be unique for your school.
    • Rubric description: Enter a description for your rubric; this is optional and is only for you (and your colleagues, if applicable) and cannot be seen by students.
    • Rubric type: Select whether student scores will be assigned based on Percent correct (overall percentage of answers scored as correct) or Total correct (total number of correct answers, regardless of the number of items). Assignments that use Continuous mode should use the “Total correct” option.
    • Rubric points: Select the maximum number of points possible for your rubric (up to 10). PLEASE NOTE: Changing the number of points will change the rubric table on the form, causing you to lose any minima or labels you may have entered.
    • Rubric: Enter the Minimum Correct value and Label that correspond with each point value in your rubric. For example, if you have a 4-point rubric and want your students to earn 1 point when they score at least 20% correct on an assignment, enter “20” in the Minimum Correct column. Make sure your values correspond with the Rubric type that you selected. Labels are optional.
    • Share rubric with colleagues: If you have multiple Chemistry teachers at your school using the ChemQuiz.net Dashboard, you can choose to share the rubric with your colleagues so that they can also edit it. Rubrics are visible to all teachers at the same school.
    • Activation: Check this box to activate your rubric so that it can be used to score your assignments.
  • Click the pink Save New Rubric button:

Your rubric is now available to be used in any assignment!

Using a rubric to score assignments

To use a rubric to score your assignments, you can select it when you either create or edit an assignment. On the assignment form, scroll to the Rubric row and click the selection menu to display your rubrics:

Select the rubric you’d like to use and then save your assignment. Rubric scores will then be displayed on the Results and Grades pages for that assignment, and students will see the rubric score when they complete an assignment or look at their Results in the ChemQuiz.net Dashboard.

Rubric examples

One way to use the rubrics feature is with a typical 4-point rubric based on the percentage of questions that are answered correctly:

Another way to use rubrics is to ensure students answer a minimum number of questions correctly; this is especially useful for assignments that use Continuous mode:
